Nahh, who wants to blog eh :-) Don't think of it as blogging, more about writing to dear diary and then your best mate sharing it with the rest of the class :-)

Always good to hear your thoughts - on a blog, IM, or in person ... So, when will the book be coming out :-)

Good luck "down there" ;-)

Wow Sydney is backward in Beer! I can think of a least 5 places to buy a pint here in Canberra and at least two of them you can drink a pint and play darts too.

Your mission if you choose to accept it is to find a Pub near North Ryde where you can buy a pint of New with a dash of Stones (green ginger wine). I'll come up early next month and we can get some Lads / Ladettes to have a quick clensing Ale before the SMB IT Sydney Meeting. Maybe we can prize that laptop out of fuzzy's hands for ten minutes too.

I had the same problem (Business N 64-bit). It turned out I had to download the 64-bit Windows XP version of WMP11, after that it worked like a charm. Please note that I did all this before I installed Service Pack 1.

Hey Marlon,

Microsoft Office under the Office Ready Programme is a trial version so after 60 days you'll know because it will remind you to upgrade. The Office Ready Programme is only available on new machines, so if you have just bought your laptop and there is a copy of Microsoft Office 2007 on there which you didn't order (or haven't been charged for), then chances are, you have a trial version of Microsoft Office.

If that is the case, give whoever sold you the laptop a call and they can sort you out (for the cost of the software) with a full version.

Hi Richard,

My apologies for not responding sooner, I've moved over to Oz so have been busy settling in.

CRM itself sounds like it could be too bulky for what you are looking for. So, the choices are probably going to be ACT!, something from Goldmine (although I know some Goldmine dealers who are converting to MS CRM) or maybe something that is custom built - the latter may give you some options where you can have something that suits you and you can pay for it over a certain time period (inc. maintenance, updates, modifications etc...).

Give the Office User Group (UK) (http://www.officeusergroup.com/) a nudge, I'm sure between them, they will have a few experts in the field of BCM and Office Accounting - they may even get your problem fixed so that you don't have to dig deep into your pockets! :)

Hi Susanne:

We installed Outlook with BCM in December along with Microsoft Accounting and have had nothing but trouble ever since. Microsoft only provides call back support which is very time consuming and inconvenient. We were looking for a product that would run our front end CRM and marketing programs and then interface with time and project management and be seamless with an accounting package for billing.

We have yet to get the two systems to talk to each other and it would seem that there is great potential for the whole system when it is working, but it seems fraught with bugs at this point.

We are not aware of too many people that have the whole package installed and workingin So. Cal. So if there is a usres group out there that could provide some help it would be great.

Yes, you are right about business failure after a major disaster. This
we have also seen recently in the UK when major flood caused a
major breakdown for various IT and non-IT companies to lost their
data.

Using backup software which is embedded in OS is a good idea when you are sure
about your hardware. Major data lost occur due to hard disk failure or controller
failure. In this case, you wont be able to retrive from your hard disk and basically
you will lose all your data unless you have done offsite backup.

Hi,

I hope somebody can help me with this problem with windows mobile centre and my orange m700 (but god I hate having these problems!). I have been running a windows smartphone and wm phones for about 5 years now and you wiould think you would now all the problems...but alas!

I have an orange spv m700, a new laptop and a new pc...both running vista home premium. I can sync with my lap top but for some reason I cant with my pc. It recognises the phone, syncs notes but wont sync anything else. I have tried everything I can but nothing seems to work...when I mean everything there does not seem to be much you can do except update to wmc 6.1, change connection settings and a few tweaks. Anybody got any ideas?

hi, i have the same problem as richard! once i run the installer, accept the license agreement the installer quits. After a couple of wmp-xp installers with other languages (dutch) and the 64-bits versions the installer gives me the following messagebox:
No Windows Media Player updates for your computer are available for download and installation at this time.

but still the wmp isn't installed!
does anyone got a solution?

My name is Bryan from Microsoft Office Accounting Technical Support. Just wanted to point out that the product is £149.95 not £249.99. I do see that this was posted in December 07' though. FYI -> I do support strictly for the UK version. :)

I posted some comments, including UI and other information (as in when and how it was in Vista's timeline) at http://uksbsguy.com/blogs/doverton/archive/2008/01/27/work-on-windows-vienna-windows-7-has-started-and-the-rumours-videos-and-builds-are-beginning-to-fly.aspx

It will be a long time before we see Windows 7, but as is always the case, the development started straight away. Most people only saw Vista at the beta stage and this is clearly not at alpha yet.

If we want to sell to our customers, then Vista is the answer, not waiting the 2+ years (a guess) until Windows 7 ships.

Having similar problems with a XDA Stellar and XP on a 5 yr old PC with Active Sync

What seems to work is:

a) ON THE PHONE: - In Settings/Connections/USBtoPC - I had to UNTICK ‘Enable Advanced Network functionality’ as above
b) Disable both Windows and McAfee firewalls (disconnected internet)

But after playing with this it may be my USB connection is not great and I needed to firmly push the plug into the USB

Cheers

Very Sorry to see this happened and hope you are OK... glad you had your plan, mad that you thought about how to make it into a blog, but that is what we like about you. (Well, one of the things. There is also the way you cut through the bs... do I need to go on?)

One thing to add to the mix that I saw when Jeff Middleton saw New Orleans go under... is there anything you need (no, I don't have a spare car)... ?

While you are being very business about this, one other point to consider - was there anything missing from your plan or your plan to prevent it happening again? Sometimes these things teach us what to do next time to stop it becoming a disaster. When I sold DR, 95% of all DR plans had a key element missing so failed .. frightening if someone was paying 2M per year for the benefit of the backup!

Hi Susanne,
Just thought I would add one piece to the above.
With SBS R2 as long as you have done the full install, includes Exchange 2003 Service Pack Two, this adds the extra functionality to get the Push Email to Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices.
For SBS 2003 SP1 this is a free upgrade and well worth the install, as one extra reward is the size limit of the the stores changed from 16 to 18GB, bt with the extra reg key expandable to 75GBs.
Hope all is well,
David

Yes the prices used here are the annual repayments, this particular pricing example is using Open Value licensing including Software Assurance which splits over three years. For a specific quote for a particular situation I would suggest contacting your software distributor such as Westcoast (01189 126 088) to understand how much it will cost exactly.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 will be available through:

Open License (NB: no step ups available under this programme for Workgroup or Professional servers. Those who have purchased under these programmes and wish to move to a successive edition or language version will have to purchase it new.)
Open Value
Select
EA
CRM Live (see comments above)
BRL ERP Advanced Management and BRL Academic Alliance
ISV Royalty
SPLA
and System Builder

As far as I am aware, CRM Live is at present only available in the US and Canada - it is anticipated that the service is available internationally at some point but no date has been committed to. More information on this can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/dynamics/crm/live/default.mspx although even the homepage talks about launching in 2007 rather than 2008!

PC World Business in the US posted an article on it last year which gives insight to some of the editions available under the Live service: http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/134314/microsoft_sets_pricing_rollout_for_crm_live.html

Was there talk of CRM Live (http://www.crmlive.com)? I noticed the site has changed and says something about "Coming Spring 2008". The Early Access Programme was only for the US. The hosted version looks really interesting and could be a good option for small businesses, especially if what I'm lead to believe is true and the customisation is as flexible as the full version.

Yes, this is great news. It's good to see this change, particularly in the light of the discussions surrounding the programme as per the forums and blogs. It'll be interesting to see what else comes from MS UK and what the hit rate is on these particular pages in the next few months.

Hi Paulie

Thanks for your feedback - I'm glad you are enjoying Vista personally and hope you are coming across the benefits of using the OS. Can you tell me about some of the flaws you are talking about when it comes to Vista? Do they include App Compat, Device Drivers or new UI being different? - these are some of the common push backs from those who don't want to move. The first two are becoming less of an issue to be honest and we've done a load of work to make sure that apps work well and also devices have Vista drivers. As for the UI being different, yeah it is. Arnold Bennet said that "any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts" - but I hope you agree that the change is worth it even if it did take a little getting use to.

Like the blog too, Paul - keep up the good work.

I still frequently sell new machines from Dell with the XP downgrade pre-loaded. I'm not sure Microsoft have failed to market the product. The product itself has so far failed to WOW and undeniably XP is superior in certain areas and situations...

I use Vista exclusivley now and don't come up against any issues, but I have stopped making exuses for the product in situations where obvious flaws are pointed out to me. When customers ask me for my recommendation I explain the pros and cons and let them make the decision for themselves, otherwise you can end up receiving the blame if the end user is not happy!

I suppose the bottom line is that XP is the safe choice, it is fast, reliable and people know it backwards.

Looking forward to finding out - always worth asking Microsoft early so they can make sure they have plenty of time to ask and incorporate it in their plans! :)

Hi Suze,

Great question but given Cougar is still over a 6 months away at least, nothing will be decided or announced until the new year.

I'll definitely let you know as soon as we know & can share.

Last time my Outlook 2007 had stopped indexing things, it turned out to be related to my "Power Options". I came across it thanks to a post on Quent Herschelman's blog. Basically, Windows will not do any indexing if "Search and Indexing" is in "Power Saver" mode. It might be worth checking your settings. Here's my blog entry about it, complete with screenshot: http://www.everythingeverything.co.uk/comments.php?id=1827

Can't believe there are no comments on this yet...

Microsoft Nothing 2008,

Following up the non-success of Microsoft Something 2007, Microsoft Nothing will not revolutionise the way you don't work or make ignoring your co-slackers any easier

By not utilising their years of product development experience Microsoft are not producing a world beating system, Microsoft Nothing wont give any immediate gains and give 100% RON (return on nothing)

I'm not very good at this.........
