Great marketing…

… is when others do it for you. The only way I’ll prove it is if you click on the link at the bottom of this page once you’ve read my post…

Find something that involves your target market and reward them; create a buzz, a bit of spin, and something that allows those who help you spread the word see how they affect those they pass it onto. The Snakes on a Plane film website did something like this in the run up to the film’s release. The promo site got you to type in a few personal details about a friend of yours which when imported into a standard message read by Samual L. Jackson created a personal recording which you would send to said friend - very amusing! You may also remember the recent Cadbury’s advert which I blogged about - both of these examples don’t really focus on the actual product but they involve the customer - it gets them taking some level of ownership. That’s buy-in.

Here’s the latest one that impressed me. It all sparked from a conversation I had over dinner a few nights ago as we chatted about the film called the Golden Compass.

“If you could have any animal to protect you that protected you, what would it be?”

It’s not everyday that you get asked but I really didn’t have a clue. I’d quite like to have an eagle but they’re not very cuddly. Maybe a horse? No, they don’t do fighting very well (can’t hold a sword or fire a gun). A wolf? Well it wouldn’t be much competition against an angry elephant! Hmmm…

As I sat there listening to all the cool animals he wanted to have (snow leopards, white tigers, lions etc…) the child in me actually thought quite a bit about it.

Remember, this all came about because we were discussing the film.

Later that evening I visited the film’s website and saw that there was a section that asked you 20 questions and worked it out for you! Hoorah! That way, if it were a rubbish animal (like a rat) then I could blame someone else!

I took the test (a personality test of sorts) and here’s what my Daemon animal would be:

Klitus

My profile reveals that I am:

Modest, fickle, a leader, assertive and outgoing.

That’s when it stopped being about just animals and more about personality traits. Some server in some boring office basement had issued me with a really cool animal, ignited my imagination, plus a judgement that me being me gave consideration to.

That’s when I thought, ‘hmmm what would other people be based on their results?’

So why don’t you find out and let me know?

I’m off to watch the film this weekend too…. the marketing worked as far as I’m concerned.

  2. I am some sort of an ugly a.. dog:

“You are sociable, competitive, responsible, modest and inquisitive”

Don’t know where they got the “modest” from but the rest I’ll take. Secretly, I always expect these personality quizes to come out compellingly bad:

“You appear to be an axe murderer in search of a more effective weapon to be used in a mass killing. You’re a psychopath and a sociopath, your IP has been logged and sent to the police.”

    No luck so far…
