When good advertising goes bananas…

If you caught any of the World Cup rugby over the last week and sat through the ad breaks, you may have been treated to Cadbury’s new advertising campaign.

It’s not what you would typically associate with the company and is aimed cleverly at who they perceive will be watching the TV at the time. There is only one clue through the whole of the advert (until the end) that it’s a Cadbury’s advert… the purple wallpaper. Very clever.

If you got that it was Cadbury’s the first time you saw it (and nobody had said to you previously ‘you have got to see the Gorilla advert!’) then the marketers employed for this job deserve a big pat on the back. It seems the company have taken a chance to move out of their comfort zone and try something new.

The best bit about it is that once a few see it, the viral marketing aspect kicks in. I’ve had at least six people ask me if I’ve seen the advert and had two conversations over how funny it is. Even now, I’ve felt motivated to post about it because I haven’t seen something so remarkable in a while.

What’s even better is that people are volunteering to take it that one stage further and contribute to the messaging. Remember the Ford advert where the KA beheads the cat with the sunroof? Well here’s what people have been up to with the Gorilla!

Original Version (watch out for the snarl…)

Bonny Tyler Version

50 Cent Version

In every instance, Cadbury gets a mention. There are views of over 290,000 in some cases. I don’t doubt that there are many more spin-offs to come about from this advert.

What great advertising! Sounds like a true Purple Cow in my mind!

What could you do to get your message out there courtesy of your clients? Do you remember when I posted that it’s easier to motivate your staff if you can connect their work with something that excites them? Looks like the same works for customers! :)

Does Cadbury want you to buy more chocolate? Of course! Do they think that this advert is going to motivate people to leave the pub and their pints and a good game of rugby for it? No! But they know this is an awareness generation piece and in the light of their product recalls and because of all the other competing products in their market, they’ve dared to be different.

Looks like they did just that.

p.s. did you click on ‘Eh? Come Again?!’ button at the bottom of the original version? What a good way to capture and quantify customer interest.

Right, I’m off to find that track and play it in full. :)
