OEM System Builder Packs and Office Ready PCs
I get lots of information from Microsoft which I like to pass onto Small Business Partners in case you don’t get to receive it directly… so here you go…
Any UK Microsoft System Builder Partners should keep an eye out in the post for their latest OEM System Builder Packs.
In it you should find a letter enclosed from Alison Dodd (Senior Director for OEM) which outlines some Call to Actions regarding the Office 2007 OPK (OEM Preinstall Kit). Here is a summary just in case you miss it:
Overview:
- OEM Office 2007 has a different business model to OEM Office 2003
- OEMs and the Channel are tasked with installing the Trial Office 2007 image to the PCs hard drive. (The PC is then called an ‘Office Ready PC’ or ORPC)
- End customers do not receive Media (as standard) but purchase an MLK (Media-less License Kit) which activates the Office image on the Hard Drive.
Call to Action:
- If you purchase an Multinational branded PC with the Office image installed (ORPC), then sell an MLK with the PC to your customer.
- If you purchase a Multinational branded PC without the Office image, then use the OPK (OEM PreInstall Kit) to install the image, then sell it with an MLK.
- If you build your own brand PCs, then use the OPK to install the Office Image, then sell it with an MLK.
Remember:
- OPKs are the ‘channel only’ disk sets that install the image on the PCs Hard Disk Drive
- MLKs are the activation keys that enable the Image to be used by the end-user.
If you have any questions, please ask your Partner Account Manager (PAM) or call the Ask Partner Hotline on 0870 60 70 700.

Hi,
I am an end-user and I got my laptop recently preinstalled with the Office 2007 image. But what happened was that I downgraded my Vista to XP instead and now I am having problems trying to install my OEM SMB Office 2007. Where can I find the image for Office 2007? My product key doesnt seems to work with those SMB version that I have downloaded directly from the web. If it is possible, is it ok for you to send me the installation image or the software? Thank you.
Hello Sandra,
I’m not sure how to put this but I’ll give it a go…
No, it is not okay for me to send you the installation image or the software.
You should talk to one of your local Microsoft Small Business Specialists to help you. You can find out who is close to you by clicking on the following link http://www.microsoft.com/uk/smallbusiness/how-to-buy/solution-finder/find-a-partner.mspx.
You either need to call up one of the guys found in the directory via the link or you call up whoever you bought your laptop from and they will be able to help you.
Thank you.
