OneCare and Xbox 360 | Media Extender

I installed a fully working copy of OneCare yesterday on my home machine. I’ve been trialling it in Beta format and have been very pleased with it so far. As a home user, I sometimes forget what I preach at work and the program keeps me in check and reminds me backup my machine regularly. Thank goodness really as I’m archiving all my CDs that I have collected over the years as well as all those photos that I’ll never print off but are fun to revisit once in a while.

After a quick game of Perfect Dark Zero I decided to crack on with a bit of work (the next few weeks will have me out and aboot so I need some ’sitting still’ time). Usually I stream my music from my upstairs machine through my Xbox but it seems OneCare blocks the Ports which I had carefully opened initially.

All I can say is thank goodness for Google (other reputable Internet search engines also available!) and for a few MVPs who had contributed to a forum discussion. But as you know, forum discussions don’t always solve the problem.

The thread didn’t solve the problem I facedĀ and I worked out how to resolve the issue with a bit more exploring.

After allowing TCP 3390 and UDP 1900 you will also need to ensure that OneCare’s default settings in the ‘Sharing’ tab is amended so that you can also share files and printers on your local network. Without this, your Xbox will show it as connected to your PC but you won’t be able to stream music (for example).

You will see from the thread I checked out that David didn’t get the problem resolved just on that information either… hopefully he found out how to do it too.
